A New Vision of Mathematics Pathways

The New Life project has been active now for 3 years; faculty have been supportive of the model, and even inspired.  With the help of many people, the ‘word is out’.

The basic model has remained as that developed in 2009 by a variety of experts and practitioners.  However, based on questions people have asked, I have updated the visual image that describes the  model.  Here it the updated chart:

I realize that this chart may be ‘hard to read’ in a browser, so here is a file to download (pdf format):  New Math Pathways General Vision 4 2 12

We’re looking for a text for our Basic Math/Arithmetic coure for when we switch to semesters next year. We would like to find a reform oriented text. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Tom:
Thanks for the note. It is really difficult to find a good text for basic math, even if you are not looking for a reform oreinted text. Most of the recent ‘1st edition’ texts were begun with the goal of being different (some of them wanted to be reform), but the reviewing and editing process results in books without much difference. One of these recent books was done by two friends of mine — Graham Smith & Brian Goetz (a Pearson text). The content is fairly traditional; the approach unique.
I realize that basic math is a concern for many people; however, this is not an area that I invest much time in. You might try sending a note to the MATHEDCC list (mathedcc@mathforum.org) with a request for info on a ‘reform basic math text’.
    Jack
